Our Approach~ a philosophy of care
Creating Stability Through Supported Living
With 30 years of experience, the residence is designed to support long-term wellbeing by helping residents maintain stability, reduce setbacks, and build a sustainable daily routine.
structure, community, and purpose
Life at Gateway House is guided by routine and predictability. Each day is organised to help residents feel secure, supported, and engaged. This structured approach plays an important role in promoting emotional balance and reducing uncertainty. The residence accommodates a limited number of individuals, ensuring that each person receives attentive, personalised support within a community setting.
Comprehensive Support
Residents benefit from a holistic approach that addresses both practical and emotional needs:
Daily Living Guidance
Support is provided with everyday activities such as personal care, meals, and maintaining a routine. The aim is to encourage independence while ensuring that help is always available.
Mental and Emotional Support
Residents are assisted in managing challenges related to their condition and interpersonal difficulties, with ongoing encouragement to build resilience and coping skills.
Development and Engagement
Opportunities are created for residents to participate in activities that promote life skills, social interaction, and a sense of purpose.
Connection to the Community
Where appropriate, residents are supported in engaging with the broader community in a safe and meaningful way, helping reduce isolation.
Transport support
Should residents need to attend medical appointments or mental health clinics, the facility staff will assist with reasonable transportation requests.
24-Hour Care and Supervision
Live-in care worker staff are available at all times to provide assistance, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
Who the Residence Supports
Gateway House is an open residential facility in Waverley, Johannesburg and is suitable for adults living with stabilised bipolar and schizophrenia conditions who benefit from a structured, semi-supervised environment. It is particularly appropriate for individuals who require ongoing support to manage daily life and maintain stability.
Admission is based on a careful review process, ensuring that each placement aligns with the needs of the individual and the support available at the residence as well as suitability to integrate and get on with other residents. Families and professionals are included in this process to ensure the best possible outcome.
Philosophy of Care
The approach at Gateway House is centred on support, consistency, and care. Residents are supported in a way that recognises their circumstances while encouraging growth and independence over time.
By maintaining routine, providing compassionate support, and fostering a sense of belonging, the residence helps individuals move toward greater stability and improved quality of life.
